Valentine’s Day – a day to celebrate love. Many take issue with this holiday, saying that it’s just society’s way of getting people to buy into things – balloons, flowers, candy, cards. But I like to think of it as a day that gives a little more insight to love. It’s just highlighted. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t celebrate the person you love on other days, that you should only show them how much they mean to you on this specific day. It’s more than that. You should celebrate the person you love on the “regular” days. Absolutely!
I love Valentine’s Day. But that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, because I love “love”. I love everything about it and have always been a lover. Ask anyone that knows me well and they’ll tell you. It’s just part of who I am. I love.
This year was my second Valentine’s Day with Cory, and it’s another that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. We exchanged gifts on Friday since we both had them and couldn’t really wait much longer – ha! Typical, honestly. He had told me not to spend much money on him and that it really didn’t matter what I got him. So, I gave him a few small things that he had asked for, along with a few surprises. He’s a HUGE coffee drinker in the mornings, and I just happened to come across the perfect mug. It’s associated with Valentine’s Day, sure, but it’s still “manly” so I went for it. It says “The Best Guy”. I tell Cory that all the time, and even though he laughs and plays it off, I truly mean it when I say it. And now he’ll be reminded of it time and time again while he’s sipping on his coffee in the mornings. :) He says he loves it, so that’s a win! And I also found the most adorable “Beanie Boo” named Duke…it’s like a beanie baby but smaller. Anyway, it was the perfect addition to fit inside the mug and was a huge hit! My guy – he has a huge heart!
My guy also spoils me, something I’m definitely not used to. His gift to me this Valentine’s Day? Diamond earrings. Holy wow! To say I was shocked is an understatement. My very first pair of diamond stud earrings. And yes, I LOVE THEM! I teared up and told him it was too much, and he just hugged me and told me that I was worth it. That I was worth every penny he spent. And every time I put them on, like today, I’ll be reminded not only of his love for me but also of my worth. Because that’s something he’s definitely taught me – that I’m worthy of such love and adoration and surprises and gifts and loyalty. I am worthy, and that’s something I’m really, definitely, seriously not used to! But I’m working on it, and I have the perfect partner to help me along the way…because he is constantly showing me that I’m worthy.
Although our actual Valentine’s Day didn’t go quite as anticipated and wasn’t as filled with love and being spoiled and adored, it was real. It was filled with food prep and cooking and chores and emotions and feelings, and yes, even tears. But it reminded me that I am unbelievably blessed. It reminded me that I’d rather spend every Valentine’s Day like this year, complete with hurt feelings and routines than be with someone who goes over the top to spoil me ridiculously on one day of the year and I’m unhappy with the other 364 days (unless it’s Leap Year, like this year, then it’d be the other 365 days). It reminded me that Cory makes me unbelievably happy and that I’m blessed.
