I got a girl crush
hate to admit it but,
I got a hard rush
ain’t slowing down
Little Big Town has apparently shaken things up with their new song, Girl Crush, #5 on the album Pain Killer. I didn’t know it was such a big deal until I heard Bobby from the Bobby Bones Show discussing it. I listened for a while and wanted to understand what all the hype was about – I hadn’t even heard the song before then, so I was intrigued.
I got it real bad
want everything she has
that smile and that midnight laugh
she’s giving you now
A few radio stations had pulled the song from rotations due to complaints from listeners. Apparently, people read the title, Girl Crush, and hear it performed by a woman and automatically assume the song is about lesbians. I guess I had a leg up and knew it was causing controversy, but I really listened to the lyrics the first time I heard it.
I wanna taste her lips
yeah, ’cause they taste like you
I wanna drown myself
in a bottle of her perfume
Well, I can see why some people were quick to jump to conclusions. If you’re only half-listening, you hear about her wanting to taste her lips and drowning herself in her perfume – it sounds like the singer is talking about being with a girl.
I want her long blonde hair
I want her magic touch
yeah, ’cause maybe then
you’d want me just as much
But instead of automatically complaining to the radio stations about playing it on air, it would’ve been wise of those complaining to instead, actually listen to the song in its entirety.
I got a girl crush
I got a girl crush
People just assumed it was about lesbians, but it’s a song about jealousy. And it sums up those feelings perfectly. Like, to the T, couldn’t get any closer if you tried! The song is slow and raw, and I honestly don’t know how you CAN’T really listen to the lyrics and understand what is being said.
I don’t get no sleep
I don’t get no peace
thinking about her
under your bed sheets
I’ve been cheated on. More than once. And these words, these raw feelings and emotions, they’re dark, but they’re on point. Completely and totally, this is exactly how I felt in both instances of being cheated on. It hurts and you go a little crazy, it’s true. It hurts so bad that you want to DROWN yourself in a bottle of the other girl’s perfume. I may not have taken it that far, but it’s definitely something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. It’s heartbreak, and it’s called that for a reason.
the way that she’s whispering
the way that she’s pulling you in
Lord knows I’ve tried
I can’t get her off my mind
This song isn’t necessarily about being cheated on. The same can hold true if you’re still in love with an ex-boyfriend and he’s already moved on to someone else. You want to know what she has that you don’t – what is it about her that makes him more attracted to her than to you? What makes her so special? Is it her long, blonde hair? Does she have a magic touch? Is it the smell of her perfume?
I wanna taste her lips
yeah, ’cause they taste like you
I wanna drown myself
in a bottle of her perfume
The crazy emotions are epically portrayed through this song. And I love it. It’s a break-up, mad at the world kind of song about being utterly and completely in love and having your heart broken. It’s a song that you can dwell on for months and months (if you’re into that sort of thing) and drive yourself crazy – because face it, you’re doing that anyway and now you have a theme song for this phase of your life. I know I would’ve turned to this song on more than one occasion for that exact reason. When you’re in those feelings and need to dwell on them for a while, this is a perfect go-to song. Crank it up, light some candles, and cry to your heart’s content.
I want her long blonde hair
I want her magic touch
yeah, ’cause maybe then
you’d want me just as much
I got a girl crush
If you haven’t already figured it out, I’m completely for this song. I’ve played it on repeat more than once, and I’m not even “in those feelings” right now. As relationships go, I’m actually on the opposite end of the spectrum right now. But it’s still a great song! It’s slow and catchy and emotional. 5 stars from me!
