#collaboreads & March Book Review

March 30, 2016 in books, linkup

I read two very amazing books this month, and I’m so excited to share them! So, I’m jumping right in.

I love me some Emily Giffin, and I was pretty excited to read The One & Only this month! I honestly hadn’t heard too much about this one and didn’t read very many reviews, but I read that football was a main component and “small town” and I knew I’d like it. Little did I know that I’d LOVE it! I “read” this one as an audiobook this month (I finally jumped on the Audible train!!) and was obsessed. I wanted to listen to it all.the.time. It definitely is football-focused, but it didn’t bother me at all, also coming from a small town and surrounded by football. And I really found myself dying to know what happened in the end. And then I was sad when it actually ended because I wanted MORE! I gave this one 5 stars.

**SPOILER ALERT: do not read this paragraph if you don’t want part of the story ruined!**
Several of the reviews I did read prior to starting this book commented on how gross and wrong it was for Shay to have intimate feelings towards a man who was a father-figure during her entire life – her best friend’s father. This really sat with me and I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about it while reading the book. However, I was rooting for Shay and Coach the entire time! They definitely had a special connection and didn’t do anything “wrong”. I don’t know if it’s because I listened to this one and didn’t read it myself, but hearing the story unfold, I wanted them to find happiness together. Is it weird? Yes, of course. But you can’t help who you love and they definitely didn’t plan on having feelings for each other.

Next up is the book I chose for this month’s #Collaboreads linkup with Amber and Rachel. This month’s topic was “a memoir”. I’m not super familiar with memoirs, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. So, I took the only logical route and searched Goodreads for memoirs. And then I landed on one. The Marriage Test by Jill Andres and Brook Silva-Braga.

Jill and Brook decided to go on 40 dates focusing on the things they would face if and when they got married, to make sure they were “ready” to say “I do”. So to review this bad boy, I’m using the R.E.A.D.S. format that Amber and Rachel came up with. (READS = Riveting. Elements. Associate. Design. Stars.)
RIVETING
I seriously could not get enough of these dates! Every one of them was intriguing and made me reflect on my own relationship with Cory. They really were focused on issues that come up in a marriage and getting their insight as they approached each and every one was definitely inspiring and eye-opening.

ELEMENTS
I touched on this a little already, but I definitely related to the characters. Having been married before and in a serious relationship now, I respected the effort and commitment that Jill and Brook put into their marriage test. And I was rooting for them the entire time!

ASSOCIATE
I really haven’t read any other books like this one or seen anything like it on TV. It was completely new territory for me as far as a book goes, and like I said, I was intrigued! It kept my attention from the very first page and I quickly became invested in their “project” and the outcome.

DESIGN
The cover is seriously cute and it drew me in from the start. It directly related to the content of the book and encompasses everything.

STARS
4 stars. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone that is in a serious relationship and/or are looking to take the next step: marriage. I’d even recommend it to couples that are already married, as it touches on some serious topics on issues that arise in a marriage.
