holy flooding, batman

April 18, 2016 in life lately, texas

What would have started as a normal Monday turned into an unexpected 3-day weekend!

I knew the forecast called for rain, but I wasn’t expecting such flooding to happen (again). Before bed last night, I knew a lot of schools in the area (Austin, Houston, etc.) were delayed 2 hours, but then I woke up to this blaring in my ear:

Yes, that’s 4:18AM!

Naturally, I couldn’t go back to sleep, so I browsed social media to check on the floods, damage, closures, rescues, etc. in the area and across Texas. And then I discovered that Fayette County was hit HARD, with several closures and roads completely under water!

And it only got worse from there. So many people lost cars, animals, bridges, homes, and so much more. The number of status updates on Facebook asking for help or saying how they were heartbroken with what/how much they lost seriously gave me goosebumps. It’s nothing anyone can control, but it’s so sad to see such destruction and heartbreak that mother nature causes sometimes.

Our office was delayed 2 hours (with AISD delays and closures), so I knew I didn’t have to get up as early as normal (score!). And when I did wake up and tried to determine whether our offices were closed or not (the hotline was kind of confusing!), we headed out to see if we could even leave the property, and we quickly learned that we definitely couldn’t.

Flooding waters are seriously no joke, and they don’t say “Turn around, don’t drown!” for no reason, y’all! It’s serious business and absolutely dangerous. There was no way I was going to even attempt to cross that bridge. So, it’s an unexpected 3-day weekend for me! And while it was glorious to sleep to the sounds of rain falling and distant thunder and to have an unexpected 3-day weekend, it’s so much more than that. I am praying for all those affected by these floods and raging waters. I am praying for all the men and women that are risking their lives to rescue those in danger due to the weather. I am praying for peace and comfort to those that have lost everything. It’s so devastating, and I am so beyond thankful that my loved ones are safe and dry.

And it’s not over yet. There is forecasted rain and severe thunderstorms for the next few days, so this could easily be only the beginning…
