This weekend was yet another great one! Seeing as it was one of the hottest weekends of the year (oh, you know, only 100+ degrees…), Cory and I headed to Austin to see a few movies! His picks: Minions and Trainwreck.
Looking into tickets for these movies, a few more caught my eye that are currently in theaters. I brought it up to Cory and he agreed on seeing FOUR films in one day! Holy wow. I had never seen more than one movie in a theater in a day, so I wasn’t sure how it’d go, but it was great! We ended up seeing Paper Towns, Southpaw, Minions, and Trainwreck. In that order. That’s 10 hours in the movie theater, just hopping from one flick to the next. Some of the waiters started looking at us funny by the third movie and we just couldn’t help but laugh! I guess it’s not every day that you see the same patrons throughout your entire shift at the theater.
Paper Towns was a pretty good pre-teen/teen movie. It paled in comparison with The Fault in Our Stars, but it was still pretty good nonetheless. Without giving anything away, it was a pretty great film about high school and a first love. It had a few lessons about finding yourself and what’s truly important in life, especially as you head off into the real world and leave everything you’ve ever known behind, including your two best friends. It’s hard. It’s scary. Been there, done that. But it’s a rite of passage and this movie portrays it pretty well. It’s also pretty funny!
I also enjoyed this one because it was parts predictable and parts mysterious. I wasn’t too sure about the sleuthy aspects of this movie with the hidden clues and “investigation” into the disappearance of Margo, but it surprised me in that I actually liked it. They didn’t get super into it so it wasn’t all that detailed and laid out. It also wasn’t too hard to follow, which was nice. A definite must-see for teens and the like about to graduate high school and/or are dealing with their first love.
Southpaw really pulled at the heart strings! I’ll just go ahead and admit it: I cried! Jake Gyllenhaul really knocked this film out of the park and portrayed an excellent Billy Hope. Seriously, I was in awe of his character and his acting throughout the entire film! And although I knew what was going to happen from the trailer, it still hurt to watch the pain, the heartbreak, the loss that the Hope family went through.
It was so sad! But it’s also a great film of overcoming and beating the odds when they’re stacked against you. It’s about fighting your way, tooth and nail, clawing out of those dark days that have such a tight grip on your entire life. Even losing everything, you can still make something of yourself. I am typically not one for these action films but I absolutely LOVED this one and recommend it to anyone and everyone. Seriously, just watch it. You won’t be sorry! But bring the Kleenex if you’re emotional like me even at fictional tales.This one apparently has some roots to reality (somewhat based on Eminem), but it also could just be anyone, so there’s that emotional tug on my heart as well.
Minions was adorable, as expected. I mean, come on. They’re MINIONS! I was afraid this movie would be nothing but grunts and random noises as the minions searched for an evil leader to follow, but I was happily surprised that this was not the case in the least. It’s a cartoon movie with human elements that makes for a quite entertaining hour and a half of minion fun.
The minions were up to their usual antics of being themselves and causing havoc wherever they went and whoever they followed. It was super cute to see how they became prior to Despicable Me. Hilary met us for this movie and the three of us just laughed and laughed. It was just so dang cute! A definite must-see if you’re into this kind of film. Excellent plot and funny scenes.
Trainwreck definitely did not disappoint! It was everything I thought it would be and more. Although, I have to admit that it was sort of a slow start. However, it picked up and did not leave us lacking by any means! Hilary joined us for this one as well and we only thought that Minions (which we saw right before this) was funny. Trainwreck is (obviously) a different kind of funny and we were just reeling. Sexual connotations at every turn, it was such a fantastic movie! We’ve already discussed buying it on Blu-Ray as soon as it comes out. It’s THAT good!
Amy Schumer did an excellent job writing and acting in this movie. I loved the ebb and flow of this film and really enjoyed how Amy (in the movie) grew as a person. She goes through it all – the one night stands, the random hookups, strangers, people she knows, hilariously awkward rendezvous, you name it, it happened. And I also have to admit that Lebron James was priceless in this movie! I don’t know how he is in real life compared to the character in the movie, but he KILLED it! Seriously – I laughed until I cried with this one.
It’s safe to say that by the end of all four of these movies, I was way more than ready to just go home. Even though the seats were super comfortable at the Moviehouse & Eatery, I had more than enough time in them for one day. On the way home, Cory and I talked about our favorites and both agreed on the order (shocker!). We ranked them in the following order.
The next day, we came across ABCFamily’s Harry Potter weekend and immediately jumped into another movie marathon! We caught movies five through seven and loved every minute of it. We’re both Harry Potter junkies and I ain’t mad about it. It was more fun of movie madness, but this time it was much, much better because it was in the comfort of home! There’s just nothing like it, let me tell ya. I also never realized just how LONG the Harry Potter movies are! Before we knew it, it was after 8pm and time to part ways. We had such a great weekend together watching movie after movie and definitely one we won’t be forgetting anytime soon!

I NEED to see Minions. Would you believe that Ive never actually seen Dispicable Me BUT they showed us clips of it at church on Sunday and now I'm dying to see it. P.S. the showed us clips at church since we're currently in a "Summer at the Movies" series. Do you ever go to Celebration Church? I remember that you went to Radiant one year but I wasnt sure if you attended Celebration!
