Unpopular Opinion: Summer

September 17, 2020 in lifestyle

I strongly dislike summer.

I won’t go all in and say “hate” because there are a [very] few things that I do enjoy about it. But that list is s.m.a.l.l.

My biggest reason for disliking summer? IT’S HOT. I live in Texas, and it’s going to continue being hot for a while yet – like several more months of heat. I guess it’s pretty obvious by now, but I don’t like being hot. Like, I hate it with a passion. Y’all, sweating is gross and uncomfortable and just eww. You can’t walk outside to walk the dog or put your toddler in the backseat of the car without gasping for air not because you’re that out of shape, but because the heat is usually suffocating! Or at the very least, it’s just hot! And sweating is gross and uncomfortable and eww. Oh, and don’t even get me started on grocery shopping! The act itself is not one of my favorite things to do, but then you have to load the grocery bags into your car [in the heat] and then again into the house once you get home [in the heat]. By the time it’s all said and done, all I want is a cold shower. Seriously. Air conditioning is my BFF.

Another reason summer is my absolute least favorite season? I burn. Super easily. I cannot go outside for even an hour in direct sun without being lathered up in sunscreen and reapplying often. My skin is just super sensitive to the sun and I’ve been this way my entire life. You’d think that would be reason enough for me to basically travel with sunscreen, right? But nope. It’s practically impossible for me to remember to keep sunscreen on hand and then actually have it with me when needed [and it not be expired when I do…]. Like, I just can’t. But I’m hoping that will change now that I’m a mom and my son apparently really likes to be/play outside a lot. Unless he has his dad’s skin, in which case he’ll be more tan than me by the time he’s 5. Ok, full disclosure: he’s already more tan than I am…

I’m now going to reiterate the fact that I live in Texas, and summer never ends in Texas. It’s probably a solid 7 months out of the year. There’s no ‘fall’ or ‘spring’ per se. It’s just HOT, and then it’s cold for a few days, and then we’re back up to hot again. Maybe not quiteeee that literally, but you get the point I’m making here, right? Yesterday was 88 degrees with the ‘real feel’ of 96. I get that it’s still officially summer, but I was informed oh so nicely [eye roll] by not only one, but TWO northerners that it was already cooling off where they live. Like, turn the heat on in your car cooling off. I can’t even imagine the blissful act of needing to turn on the heat right now! And my husband lovingly told me he had to “roll up his window in the truck because it was chilly.” He said this very much knowing that I’m down here sweating and dreaming of cooler weather! He *thinks* he’s funny…

On top of all of that, add in that (1) I’m not a huge fan of the most popular summer pastime: the beach [enter: saltwater, sand, and SUN and see above about me burning easily] and that (2) Christmas gives me LIFE, and there you have it. I am not a summer girl. I’ll repeat: I don’t like summer.

Give me breezy fall days and cozy winter nights. Please and thank you!

Signed,
a native Texan that probably should consider a different climate.
